einerseits …, andererseits

einerseits …, andererseits: on the one hand, on the other

FormEinerseits + Verb …, andererseits + Verb …

Meaning and usage

einerseits …, andererseits weighs two sides of a question: Einerseits ist die Stadt schön, andererseits ist sie sehr teuer. Both are connecting adverbs: when they open a clause, the verb comes straight after them. andererseits is also used alone: Es ist billig, aber andererseits ist es nicht gut.

Instead of einerseits you will also see auf der einen Seite …, auf der anderen Seite. The pair is typical of argumentative writing, for example in an essay that weighs advantages and disadvantages. A common mistake is subject-verb order after them: Andererseits es ist teuer.

    Correct answer: habe ich

andererseits is a connecting adverb in position 1, so the verb follows it directly: andererseits habe ich kein Geld.

    • ich habe After andererseits the verb comes before the subject.
    • ich hätte The order is wrong here too: after andererseits the verb comes first.
    • habe The clause needs a subject: habe ich.
