Formals ob … Partizip II + wäre/hätte (Ende) | als wäre/hätte … Partizip II
Meaning and usage
For an unreal comparison about the past, Konjunktiv II uses hätte or wäre + participle: Er tat so, als ob nichts passiert wäre, Sie sah aus, als ob sie seit Tagen nichts gegessen hätte. With bare als the auxiliary comes first: Sie sah aus, als hätte sie geweint.
The choice between hätte and wäre follows the perfect: passieren takes sein, so als ob nichts passiert wäre; weinen takes haben, so als hätte sie geweint. In speech you will also hear the indicative, als ob nichts passiert ist, but it sounds like a real event rather than a comparison.
