nach seiner Ankunft, vor der Abfahrt
nach seiner Ankunft: a noun for a time clause
Formnach / vor / seit / bei / während + Nomen (statt Nebensatz)
Meaning and usage
Formal German often turns a time clause into a preposition + noun: nachdem er angekommen war becomes nach seiner Ankunft; bevor er abreiste becomes vor seiner Abreise; seitdem sie gegründet wurde becomes seit ihrer Gründung; als er ankam becomes bei seiner Ankunft.
The conjunction becomes a preposition, the verb a noun, and the subject a possessive or a genitive: nach dem Abschluss meines Studiums. The preposition brings its own case. Reading official German means unpacking these, and B2 exams test the change in both directions. In speech the clause is usually more natural.
