Das ist eben so. Das ist halt so.

eben, halt: that's how it is

Form… Verb + eben/halt … (Mittelfeld)

Meaning and usage

eben and halt say that something cannot be changed and has to be accepted: Manchmal ist es eben so, So ist halt das Leben, Die Menschen sind eben unterschiedlich. In suggestions they mean then, in that case: Sollte es regnen, machen wir eben etwas anderes.

The two mean the same. halt is more common in southern Germany and Austria, eben in the north, and both are understood everywhere. Do not confuse the particle with eben meaning a moment ago (Er ist eben gegangen) or flat, or with Halt! (stop!).
