Form… Verb + ja … (Mittelfeld, unbetont)
Meaning and usage
Unstressed ja in the middle of a statement has two uses. It marks something as known to both speakers: Ich habe es dir ja gesagt (I did tell you), Du weißt ja, wie er ist. And it expresses surprise in an exclamation: Das ist ja eine Überraschung!, Dieses Essen ist ja gar nicht so übel!
It never stands first in this use and is not stressed. Do not confuse it with the answer ja (yes), or with stressed ja in warnings: Komm ja nicht zu spät! Like the other particles, it sits after the verb and the pronouns.
