B2 · Conditional clauses

Hätte ich das gewusst, wäre ich nicht gekommen.

condition without wenn: Hätte ich das gewusst, …

FormVerb (Position 1) + Subjekt …, (dann/so) Verb …

Meaning and usage

A condition can drop wenn and put its verb first instead: Hätte ich das gewusst, wäre ich nicht gekommen means the same as Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich nicht gekommen. Wäre er schneller gelaufen, hätte er gewonnen. The main clause follows, often with dann or so: Hätte ich mehr Geld gehabt, so hätte ich den Stift gekauft.

This is common in careful writing and formal speech, especially with Konjunktiv II and with sollte. The verb-first clause looks like a yes/no question, but the comma and the main clause after it make it a condition. A common mistake is keeping wenn as well: Wenn hätte ich das gewusst, ….
