B2 · Modal verbs for assumptions

Er soll sehr reich sein.

soll: is said to, according to others

Formsollen (Position 2) … Infinitiv (Ende) = man sagt, dass …

Meaning and usage

sollen can pass on what other people say, without the speaker vouching for it: Er soll sehr reich sein (he is said to be very rich), Australien soll ein wundervolles Land sein, Es soll einen strengen Winter geben. It replaces a whole clause such as Man sagt, dass er reich ist.

For the past, the infinitive goes into the perfect while soll stays in the present: Er soll im Ausland gelebt haben, Sie soll einmal schön gewesen sein. Context decides between this and the usual meaning should, be supposed to: Du sollst pünktlich sein is an instruction, Er soll reich sein is hearsay.

    Correct answer: soll

The speaker passes on what other people say, which is sollen used subjectively: Das Restaurant soll sehr gut sein.

    • will wollen reports what the subject claims about itself, and a restaurant does not claim anything.
    • mag concedes a point and usually needs an aber after it.
