Formals + Konjunktiv (direkt danach) + Subjekt …
Meaning and usage
As if can also be als alone, and then the verb comes straight after it: Er tut so, als wüsste er alles, Sie sah aus, als hätte sie geweint, Es sieht aus, als würde es regnen. This is the most common form in writing.
It is the only place in German where a conjugated verb comes directly after a subordinating conjunction. The verb is in Konjunktiv II or, in careful writing, Konjunktiv I: Sie sieht aus, als sei sie krank. The classic mistake is mixing the two orders: Er tut so, als er alles wüsste. It is either als ob er alles wüsste or als wüsste er alles.
