Das weißt du doch!

doch: you know that, surely

Form… Verb + doch … (Mittelfeld, unbetont)

Meaning and usage

Unstressed doch in a statement appeals to something the listener knows or should know, often with a note of reproach: Das weißt du doch!, Ich habe dir doch gesagt, dass du das niemandem erzählen sollst!, Du bist doch alt genug, um auf dich selbst aufzupassen. It sits in the middle of the sentence, after the verb and the pronouns.

It can also soften a contradiction: Du kannst doch nicht den ganzen Tag im Bett bleiben. Do not confuse it with stressed Doch! as an answer to a negative question, or with doch in requests: Komm doch mit! It cannot open the sentence in this use: Doch das weißt du means but you know that.
