B2 · Modal verbs for assumptions

Er will nichts gewusst haben.

will: claims to, often with doubt

Formwollen (Position 2) … Partizip II + haben/sein (Ende)

Meaning and usage

wollen can report what the subject claims about itself, usually with a hint of doubt: Er will nichts gewusst haben (he claims he knew nothing), Sie will ihn nie getroffen haben, Er will Arzt sein (he says he is a doctor). It is mostly used with a perfect infinitive: participle + haben or sein.

Compare sollen, which reports what others say about the subject: Er soll reich sein. In this sense wollen has nothing to do with wishing: Er will Arzt sein does not mean he wants to become a doctor, which would be Er will Arzt werden.

Er behauptet es, aber ich glaube ihm nicht: Er den ganzen Abend zu Hause gewesen sein.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: will

The claim is his own and the speaker doubts it, which is subjective wollen: Er will den ganzen Abend zu Hause gewesen sein.

    • muss müssen would be the speaker's own conclusion, which contradicts ich glaube ihm nicht.
    • darf is about permission; only dürfte expresses a guess, and a guess by the speaker would contradict ich glaube ihm nicht.
    • wird … gewesen sein would be the speaker's own guess, which contradicts ich glaube ihm nicht.
