sowohl … als auch means both … and, and it presents the two parts as equal: Er spricht sowohl Englisch als auch Französisch, Das gilt sowohl für Erwachsene als auch für Kinder, Sie ist sowohl reich als auch sehr hübsch. It can join nouns, adjectives, phrases or whole clauses.
When two subjects are joined, the verb is usually plural: Sowohl mein Bruder als auch meine Schwester wohnen in Berlin. sowohl … wie (auch) is also correct. A common mistake is sowohl … und: the partner of sowohl is als auch.
