Formals ob / als wenn + … Konjunktiv II (Ende)
Meaning and usage
als ob means as if. It starts a subordinate clause with the verb at the end, usually in Konjunktiv II: Sie sieht aus, als ob sie krank wäre, Er tut so, als ob er alles wüsste, Es kommt mir so vor, als ob ich dich kennen würde. als wenn means the same and works the same way.
Konjunktiv II marks the comparison as unreal or uncertain. In speech you will also hear the indicative (als ob du gerne hier bist), which sounds more like a real possibility, and careful writing sometimes uses Konjunktiv I (als ob sie krank sei). Do not confuse als ob with als meaning when or than.

Er spricht so gut Deutsch, er in Berlin geboren wäre.
Show answer
Correct answer: als ob
The comparison is unreal, and the verb wäre is at the end, so the clause starts with als ob.
- als Bare als in this meaning needs the verb straight after it: als wäre er in Berlin geboren.
- obwohl introduces a contrasting fact, not an unreal comparison.
- wenn sets a condition, which does not fit after so gut Deutsch.
