B2 · Konjunktiv I

Er sagt, er sei krank.

sei: Konjunktiv I of sein, for reported speech

FormEr sagt, er sei … | dass er … sei (Ende)

Meaning and usage

In written German, reported speech often uses Konjunktiv I, and the form you meet most is sei, from sein: Er sagt, er sei krank, Sie sagte uns, die Straße sei gesperrt. It marks the statement as someone else's: the writer reports it without saying it is true. The plural is seien: Sie sagten, sie seien froh.

sein has a complete set of Konjunktiv I forms, unlike most verbs: ich sei, du seist, er sei, wir seien, ihr seiet, sie seien. In speech people usually use the indicative instead: Er hat gesagt, dass er krank ist. Do not confuse sei with the imperative: Sei still!
