B2 · Conditional clauses

Sollten Sie Fragen haben, …

Sollten Sie …: should you, if by any chance

FormSollte(n) + Subjekt … Infinitiv, Verb …

Meaning and usage

sollte at the start of a clause, verb first, sets a condition that is possible but not expected: Sollten Sie Fragen haben, wenden Sie sich bitte an uns (should you have any questions), Sollte jemand anrufen, sag, ich sei ab eins wieder da. It does not mean ought to here.

It is very common in formal letters, notices and instructions. The same sollte can follow falls or wenn: Falls es morgen regnen sollte, fahren wir mit dem Bus. Do not confuse the condition with a question: Sollte ich sie fragen? (should I ask her?) is a real question, with a question mark and no main clause.

    Correct answer: Sollten

The clause sets a possible condition with the verb first: Sollten Sie … nicht wahrnehmen können, should you be unable to keep it.

    • Sollen is the present indicative and does not form this kind of condition.
    • Müssten would be about necessity, not a possible condition.
    • Wollten would ask about a wish, which does not fit nicht … können.
