Formobgleich / obschon / wenngleich + … Verb (Ende)
Meaning and usage
obgleich, obschon and wenngleich mean the same as obwohl, although, and work the same way: the verb goes to the end. Obgleich er Geld hat, ist er nicht glücklich. Sie überlebten, wenngleich das Gebäude zerstört wurde.
They are literary and formal. You will meet them in newspapers, books and official texts and should recognise them, but obwohl is the word to use in speech and in most writing. wenngleich can also stand before a single word: Wenngleich arm, so war er doch glücklich.

Correct answer: Obgleich
The first clause has its verb at the end, war, so it needs a subordinating conjunction meaning although: Obgleich, or obwohl.
- trotzdem is an adverb; it cannot start a clause with the verb at the end.
- dennoch is an adverb and would be followed by the verb, not by er … war.
- jedoch is an adverb and cannot introduce a subordinate clause.
