FormInfinitivstamm + -e (er/sie/es): er habe, er könne
Meaning and usage
Konjunktiv I is built from the infinitive stem + -e: haben gives er habe, werden gives er werde, können gives er könne, gehen gives er gehe. Journalists and formal reports use it to pass on what someone said: Der Sprecher erklärte, man werde die Ergebnisse prüfen, Er sagt, er könne sich an den Unfall nicht erinnern.
In practice it is mostly the third person singular, because that is where it differs from the indicative: er hat and er habe, er kann and er könne. Its point is distance: Er sagt, er habe keine Zeit reports the claim without vouching for it. In speech the indicative is normal: Er sagt, er hat keine Zeit.
