B2 · Passive alternatives

machbar, essbar, verständlich

-bar, -lich: drinkable, understandable

FormVerbstamm + -bar / -lich = kann … werden

Meaning and usage

Adjectives ending in -bar, and some in -lich, mean that something can be done: machbar (can be done), trinkbar (drinkable), essbar, erreichbar, verständlich (understandable). They pack a passive with können into one word: Das Wasser ist trinkbar says Das Wasser kann getrunken werden.

un- turns them into cannot: unvorstellbar (unimaginable), unglaublich, unsichtbar. Not every verb has one, so learn them as words. And not every -lich adjective works like this: freundlich and glücklich have nothing to do with can be done.

    • essen is the infinitive and cannot stand after ist nicht like an adjective.
    • gegessen nicht gegessen would describe a state, not eaten, not whether it can be eaten.
