B2 · Nominal and verbal style

bei genauer Prüfung, beim Essen

beim Essen: while doing something

Formbei(m) + Nomen / nominalisierter Infinitiv

Meaning and usage

bei + a noun often replaces a wenn or während clause: beim Essen (while eating), beim Überqueren der Straße (while crossing the road), beim Betreten eines Hauses (when entering a house). With a nominalised infinitive the form is beim (bei dem), because those nouns are neuter.

In formal German bei + noun also turns a condition into a phrase: wenn man es genau prüft becomes bei genauer Prüfung. Unlike the other nominal forms, beim + infinitive is common in everyday speech too: Ich bin gerade beim Kochen (I'm in the middle of cooking).
