B2 · Modal verbs for assumptions

Das kann stimmen. Er könnte recht haben. Das mag sein.

kann, könnte, mag: how possible something is

Formkann / könnte / mag + Infinitiv (Möglichkeit)

Meaning and usage

Modal verbs can say how possible something is. kann: Das kann sein, Es kann sein, dass die Geschichte seltsam klingt. könnte, a little weaker: Er könnte recht haben, Der Mann dort drüben könnte unser neuer Lehrer sein. mag concedes a point before an aber: Er mag reich sein, aber er ist geizig.

With a negative, kann nicht rules something out: Das kann nicht stimmen (that can't be true). In this sense these verbs are about the speaker's view of reality, not about ability or liking: Er mag reich sein does not mean he likes being rich.
