B2 · Modal verbs for assumptions

Er dürfte schon zu Hause sein.

dürfte: probably, a careful estimate

Formdürfte (Position 2) … Infinitiv (Ende)

Meaning and usage

dürfte, the Konjunktiv II of dürfen, says that something is probably true: Er dürfte schon zu Hause sein (he's probably home by now). It is the standard way to give a careful estimate: Das dürfte so um die 30 kg wiegen, Drei weitere Stühle dürften genügen. It is a little more certain than könnte and less certain than muss.

In this sense dürfte has nothing to do with permission. Context tells the two apart: Eigentlich dürften wir gar nicht hier sein (we're not really allowed to be here) is about permission, while Das dürfte nicht allzu schwierig sein is an estimate. A polite question such as Dürfte ich kurz stören? asks for permission.
