B2 · Concessive clauses
Wie sehr er sich auch bemühte, …
however, whatever: wie … auch, was auch immer
FormW-Wort + (…) auch (immer) + … Verb (Ende), Hauptsatz
Meaning and usage
However, whatever, whoever and wherever are built from a question word + auch or auch immer, with the verb at the end of the clause: Wie sehr er sich auch bemühte, es klappte nicht, Was auch immer passiert, ich bleibe, Wer auch immer an der Tür ist, bitte ihn zu warten.
When this clause comes first, the main clause can keep its normal order, with the subject first: Was auch immer passiert, ich bleibe. This is one of the few places where German allows that; the inverted order is also used (Wohin du auch kommst, wird man dich willkommen heißen). Here auch does not mean also.
