Common questions

How do I know when a German noun takes "der"?

Days, months, seasons, weather words, most nouns ending in -er, -ling, -ig, -ismus and -ant are masculine, as are the bare stems of many verbs (der Beginn). Otherwise, learn the article with the noun.

How many German nouns are masculine?

In this 3,108-noun CEFR list, 839 take der — about 27%. Across German as a whole the split is roughly 46% die, 34% der and 20% das, so der is the least common case.

Do I really have to memorise the gender?

Yes, and it is easier if you never store the bare noun. Say and write "die Frage", not "Frage" — the article then comes back as part of the word rather than as a separate decision. The article drill in the practice section tests exactly this.
