German Numbers, Dates and Telling the Time

A2 ElementaryZahlen, Datum und Uhrzeit in German4 questions below

The ruleCardinals are read back to front, ordinals take -te up to 19 and -ste from 20, and halb counts towards the coming hour, not away from the last one.

Cardinals: units before tens

German says the ones digit first and joins it with und. It is one word, however long.

21einundzwanzigone-and-twenty
47siebenundvierzigseven-and-forty

1 000tausend
1 000 000eine Milliona feminine noun: it declines and takes a plural

eins loses its -s before a noun (ein Buch) and inside compounds (einundzwanzig). Watch sechssechzehn, sechzig and siebensiebzehn, siebzig, which drop letters.

RuleNumbersExamples
Add -te1–19der zweite, der vierte, der neunzehnte
Add -ste20 and aboveder zwanzigste, der hundertste
Irregular1, 3, 7der erste, der dritte, der siebte

An ordinal is an adjective and takes adjective endings on top: der erste Tag, am ersten Tag, mein erstes Auto. In writing, an ordinal is a numeral followed by a full stop: der 3. Mai, am 1. Januar.

Dates

Where it goes wrong

Ich bin in 1998 geboren.

Ich bin 1998 geboren.

German does not put a preposition in front of a bare year. Either the year stands alone or it is preceded by im Jahr: in 1998 is a direct import from English and is always marked wrong.

The clock

The trap is halb. German counts towards the hour that is coming, so halb acht is half an hour before eight, not after seven: 7:30.

TimeEveryday GermanOfficial / timetable
7:00sieben Uhrsieben Uhr
7:15Viertel nach siebensieben Uhr fünfzehn
7:30halb achtsieben Uhr dreißig
7:45Viertel vor achtsieben Uhr fünfundvierzig
7:20zwanzig nach siebensieben Uhr zwanzig
19:45Viertel vor acht (abends)neunzehn Uhr fünfundvierzig

Asking the time is Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es?; answering a fixed appointment takes um: Der Zug fährt um halb acht.

Common questions

Why is 'halb acht' 7:30 and not 8:30?

Because German counts towards the coming hour rather than back from the last one: halb acht is 'half way to eight'. Speakers of English and Dutch consistently get this an hour wrong, and it is worth double-checking any appointment made this way.

How do I say a date in German?

As an ordinal with the appropriate case. 'Der dritte Mai' as a bare statement, 'am dritten Mai' for on that date. Written short, it is 3. Mai: the full stop is what marks the number as an ordinal.

Do German years take a preposition?

Only with im Jahr. 'Ich bin 1998 geboren' or 'Ich bin im Jahr 1998 geboren', but never 'in 1998', which is an anglicism and a standard exam error.
