A2 · Numbers, dates and time

der dritte Mai, am dritten Mai

saying and writing dates with ordinals

Formder + Ordinalzahl (-e) + Monat | am + Ordinalzahl (-en) + Monat

Meaning and usage

In German, dates use ordinal numbers, not cardinal numbers: der dritte Mai, not der drei Mai. In the nominative, when the date is the subject, the ordinal takes the ending -e: Heute ist der dritte Mai. Written German usually uses a number with a full stop: der 3. Mai.

To say when something happens, use am plus the ordinal with the ending -en: am dritten Mai, am 3. Mai. The same -en appears in the accusative after den: Berlin, den 3. Mai. A common mistake is keeping the nominative form after am and saying am dritte Mai; after am the ordinal must end in -en. To ask for the date, say Der Wievielte ist heute? or Welches Datum ist heute?

    Ich habe am Mai Geburtstag.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: zwanzigsten

am is short for an dem, so the ordinal takes the ending -en: Ich habe am zwanzigsten Mai Geburtstag.

    • zwanzigste is the form after der, as in Heute ist der zwanzigste Mai; after am it needs -en.
    • zwanzig A date takes the ordinal, not the plain number zwanzig.
    • zwanziger is for decades, as in die zwanziger Jahre, not for dates.
