A2 · Prepositions with a fixed case
mit dem Bus, mit meiner Schwester
with people and tools, by transport, always dative
Formmit + Dativ (dem Bus, meiner Schwester)
Meaning and usage
mit is a preposition that always takes the dative. It covers three everyday jobs: company (mit meiner Schwester, mit uns), tools (mit dem Löffel, mit dem Messer) and transport (mit dem Bus, mit dem Fahrrad). The dative shows on the article: mit dem, mit der, mit meiner, mit deinem.
For transport, English often says by or on, but German keeps mit: mit dem Zug, mit dem Auto. The one exception is walking, which is zu Fuß. The common mistake is using the accusative after mit, as in mit meine Schwester or mit den Bus. The dative is fixed by the preposition, so it never changes with the role in the sentence.
