A2 · Preterite

wurde: Er wurde Arzt.

became, the past of werden as a full verb

FormSubjekt + wurde + Nomen/Adjektiv (Satzende)

Meaning and usage

wurde is the preterite of werden when werden means to become. You use it to say that someone or something changed into something else: Er wurde Arzt, Es wurde dunkel, Sie wurde krank. The new state or role comes at the end of the sentence, often as a noun without an article, as in Er wurde Arzt.

The same form wurde also appears in the passive, as in Das Haus wurde gebaut. At A2 you only need the meaning became. A common mistake is to add ein before a profession or role: learners say Er wurde ein Arzt. With professions and roles, German normally drops the article: Er wurde Arzt.

    Correct answer: wurde

wurde is the preterite form for mein Bruder (er). The time word letztes Jahr shows the sentence is about the past, so the present forms do not fit.

    • werdet is present tense and goes with ihr, not with mein Bruder, and the past time word rules it out.
    • wirst is present tense and goes with du, not with mein Bruder, and the past time word rules it out.
    • werden is present tense and goes with wir or sie (plural), not with mein Bruder, and the past time word rules it out.
