A2 · Two-way prepositions

auf dem Tisch, auf den Tisch

auf + dative for where, auf + accusative for where to

Formauf + Dativ (wo?) / auf + Akkusativ (wohin?)

Meaning and usage

The preposition auf usually means on or onto a horizontal surface, like a table, the floor or a desk. It also appears with many open or public places such as auf dem Markt, auf der Straße or auf der Party. German marks the difference between location and direction in the case: ask wo? and use the dative, ask wohin? and use the accusative.

So location is auf dem Tisch (the glasses are lying there), and direction is auf den Tisch (I put the glasses there). The common mistake is using the accusative for a still position, for example Ich sitze auf den Stuhl instead of Ich sitze auf dem Stuhl. Remember that this rule covers place only: verbs like warten auf take auf for other reasons and follow their own patterns.

Das Buch liegt Tisch, nicht unter dem Bett.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: auf dem

The verb liegen shows the book is already there, so the question is wo? and auf takes the dative: masculine Tisch becomes dem Tisch.

    • auf der der would be the dative of a feminine noun, but Tisch is masculine.
    • auf den This accusative would fit a direction phrase like auf den Tisch legen, but there is no movement here.
    • auf das das is neuter, but Tisch is masculine, and the sentence needs the dative.
