A2 · der-words and ein-words

Das ist meins.

saying mine, yours, his with no noun

FormDas ist + Possessiv ohne Nomen (meiner / meine / meins)

Meaning and usage

When the noun is left out, the possessive stands alone and takes a der-word ending in the nominative: meiner for masculine, meine for feminine and plural, meins for neuter. The ending shows the gender of the thing owned, not of the owner: Das ist meins can mean a book, a car or a house, because das Buch, das Auto and das Haus are all neuter. This form appears most often after ist or war, in answers like Das ist meiner, and after wie or als in comparisons.

The common mistake is choosing the ending by the owner instead of the thing: a man saying Das ist meiner about das Handy, or a woman saying Das ist meine about das Geld. Ask what the owned noun is, then match its gender. Das ist mein with no ending also occurs, but the forms with endings are the ones to learn.

Ist das dein Handy? Nein, das ist nicht .

    Show answer

    Correct answer: meins

The owned thing is das Handy, which is neuter, so the standalone possessive is meins.

    • meiner would be right for a masculine noun like der Stuhl, not for das Handy.
    • meinem is a dative ending and does not occur after ist in this pattern.
    • meine fits feminine or plural nouns, for example die Tasche.
