A2 · The four cases

den Kindern, mit den Freunden

dative plural: den plus noun with -n

Formmit / von / zu + den + Dativ-Plural-Nomen + -n

Meaning and usage

After prepositions like mit, von, zu, bei and aus, plural nouns take the dative case. The article becomes den, and most nouns also add an extra -n in the dative plural: die Kinder becomes mit den Kindern, die Freunde becomes mit den Freunden, die Leute becomes mit den Leuten.

Some plurals need no extra -n because they already end in -n or -s: mit den Nachbarn, mit den Autos. The common mistake is using the accusative plural article die after these prepositions, for example mit die Kindern, or forgetting the extra -n and saying mit den Kinder. Remember the question word for the dative is Wem?: Mit wem spielst du? Mit den Kindern.

    Correct answer: mit den

After mit the noun takes the dative, and Kinder is plural, so the article is den and the noun adds -n.

    • mit dem would be dative singular masculine or neuter, not plural.
    • mit die uses the accusative article, but mit always takes the dative.
    • mit der would be dative singular feminine, but Kinder is plural.
