A2 · Prepositions with a fixed case

aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu + Dativ

Seven prepositions that always take the dative

Formaus / bei / mit / nach / seit / von / zu + Dativ

Meaning and usage

These seven prepositions always take the dative: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu. The case belongs to the preposition itself, so you use the dative even when the meaning involves movement, as in zu meiner Schwester or aus dem Haus. The dative shows clearly on articles and pronouns: dem, einem, einer, meiner, mir, ihm.

Learners often use the accusative after these prepositions, especially when they talk about movement, and say mit meinen Bruder or zu meinen Vater. The dative is required: mit meinem Bruder, zu meinem Vater. Learn the seven prepositions as a fixed list with the dative.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: meinem

The preposition mit always takes the dative. Bruder is masculine, so the dative form of the possessive article is meinem.

    • meiner is dative feminine, but Bruder is masculine.
    • mein is the nominative or neuter accusative form, and it does not fit after mit.
    • meinen is accusative masculine, but mit never takes the accusative.
