A2 · Strong verbs

bleiben, blieb, geblieben

strong verbs with ei that become ie in the past

Formbleiben, blieb, geblieben: Präsens ei, Präteritum ie, Perfekt ie + ge-…-en mit sein

Meaning and usage

Some strong verbs with the vowel combination ei change it to ie in the past and keep ie in the past participle: bleiben, blieb, geblieben, schreiben, schrieb, geschrieben, steigen, stieg, gestiegen, entscheiden, entschied, entschieden. You learn the three forms together as one unit. Note that bleiben and steigen usually form the Perfekt with sein, while schreiben and entscheiden use haben.

A small group of ei verbs breaks the pattern and goes ei to i to i instead: schneiden, schnitt, geschnitten and greifen, griff, gegriffen. Learn these two as exceptions. A common mistake is giving a verb the other group's pattern, as in schnieb instead of schnitt, or using haben with geblieben: the correct form is Ich bin zu Hause geblieben, not Ich habe zu Hause geblieben.

Als Kind ich oft bei meiner Oma.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: blieb

The time phrase als Kind calls for the Präteritum, and the stem vowel of bleiben changes from ei to ie in that tense.

    • bleiben is the infinitive and cannot be the finite verb after ich.
    • geblieben is only a participle and cannot stand alone as the verb here.
    • bleibe is present tense and does not fit als Kind.
