einen guten Wein, mit einem guten Freund

adjective takes -en after einen, einem, einer

Formeinen/einem/einer + Adjektiv(-en) + Nomen

Meaning and usage

After an ein-word that shows its own case ending, the adjective usually takes -en in the singular. This happens after einen (masculine accusative: Ich trinke einen guten Wein), after einem (dative masculine and neuter: mit einem guten Freund, mit einem guten Kind) and after einer (dative feminine: mit einer guten Freundin). The article already marks the case, so the adjective uses the same ending it would have with the definite article.

One form does not follow this rule: after eine in the feminine accusative the adjective takes -e, as in Ich habe eine gute Idee. Learners often overextend the -en rule and say forms like einen guten Freundin or mit einen guten Freund, mixing up the article ending and the adjective ending. Check the article first: its ending tells you which set the adjective needs.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: einer guten

After einer (dative feminine) the adjective takes -en, so einer guten Freundin is correct.

    • eine gute would fit a feminine nominative or accusative, but mit requires the dative here.
    • einem guten einem is the dative form for masculine and neuter nouns, not for the feminine Freundin.
    • einen guten einen is masculine accusative, but Freundin is feminine and mit takes the dative.
