A2 · Two-way prepositions
neben dem Stuhl, zwischen den Bäumen
neben and zwischen for place, next to and between
Formneben/zwischen + Dativ (wo?) / neben/zwischen + Akkusativ (wohin?)
Meaning and usage
neben means next to and zwischen means between. Like all two-way prepositions, they take the dative when the phrase says where something is, answering wo?, and the accusative when it says where something goes, answering wohin?. So you say Das Buch liegt neben der Tasse with dative, but Ich lege das Buch neben die Tasse with accusative. With zwischen: Der Stuhl steht zwischen den Bäumen, dative, but Ich stelle den Stuhl zwischen die Bäume, accusative.
This page covers only the place meanings. neben can also mean besides: Neben Deutsch spricht sie Englisch. A common learner mistake is using the dative after a putting verb: Ich stelle den Stuhl neben dem Tisch is wrong, because placing something somewhere answers wohin? and needs the accusative: neben den Tisch.

Ich stelle die Lampe Sofa.
Show answer
Correct answer: neben das
The verb stellen means putting something somewhere, so the phrase answers wohin? and neben takes the accusative. Das Sofa is neuter, so the accusative form is das.
- neben dem This dative form would fit a location phrase like Die Lampe steht neben dem Sofa, but stellen asks wohin?.
- neben der This is dative feminine and does not match das Sofa, which is neuter.
- neben den This is accusative masculine and does not match das Sofa, which is neuter.
