dunkel → ein dunkles Zimmer, teuer → ein teures Auto
short adjectives drop a letter before an ending
FormAdjektiv auf -el/-er + Endung → e entfällt (dunkel → dunkles); hoch + Endung → hohes
Meaning and usage
Some adjectives change their shape when an ending is added. Adjectives ending in -el drop the e of that syllable: dunkel becomes ein dunkles Zimmer, eine dunkle Brille. Many adjectives ending in -er do the same: teuer becomes ein teures Auto, sauer becomes saure Milch. The adjective hoch loses its c before an ending: ein hohes Haus, viele hohe Gebäude.
After sein or werden the adjective stands alone at the end of the sentence, takes no ending, and keeps its full shape: Das Zimmer ist dunkel, Der Kaffee ist sauer. The typical mistake is carrying the full form into the noun phrase or the changed form after sein: learners write ein hoches Haus or Das Auto ist teures. Remember: ending after the article, full form after the verb.

Das ist ein Haus.
Show answer
Correct answer: hohes
After ein the adjective takes an ending, and hoch drops the c: ein hohes Haus.
- hohe would fit plural or feminine nouns like eine hohe Mauer, not ein Haus.
- hoches keeps the c, but hoch drops it as soon as an ending is added.
- hoch without an ending is only used after ist or werden, as in Das Haus ist hoch.
