Formwäre (Position 2 oder Frageposition) + Rest
Meaning and usage
wäre is the Konjunktiv II form of sein, and it means would be. You use it to make statements sound softer, more polite or more hypothetical: Das wäre schön, Es wäre besser, wenn …, Wäre es möglich …?. It is a one-word form, so it stands where a verb normally stands, in position 2 in a statement or in position 1 in a yes/no question.
German prefers wäre to würde sein: Das wäre schön is the idiomatic choice, and the same goes for hätte instead of würde haben. A common learner error is using the indicative Das ist schön when a soft, hypothetical meaning is wanted. The forms are ich wäre, du wärst, er wäre, wir wären, ihr wärt, sie wären.

Ein Fenster im Wartezimmer wirklich praktisch.
Show answer
Correct answer: wäre
The sentence makes a soft, hypothetical suggestion, so the Konjunktiv II form wäre fits. The singular subject Ein Fenster also rules out the plural form.
- Wären is the plural form, but the subject Ein Fenster is singular.
- Sein is the infinitive and cannot be the finite verb of the sentence.
- Ist gewesen is a past form and does not fit a statement about what would be practical.
