A2 · der-words and ein-words

unser, euer → eure

euer drops its second e when an ending is added

Formeuer + Nomen (ohne Endung) → eur- + Endung (eure, euren, eurer …)

Meaning and usage

unser and euer are ein-words: they take the same endings as ein and kein. The special thing about euer is that it loses its second e as soon as an ending follows: euer Haus, but eure Mutter, euren Vater, eurer Mutter. The endingless form euer appears before neuter nouns in the nominative and accusative and before masculine nouns in the nominative, so both euer Haus and euer Vater are correct.

unser usually keeps both e's: unsere Mutter, unseren Vater, unser Kind. A common mistake is leaving the ending off, for example euer Mutter instead of eure Mutter, or unser Mutter instead of unsere Mutter.

Wo ist Bruder? Er war vorhin noch hier.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: euer

Bruder is masculine and the subject of the question, so the nominative endingless form euer is used.

    • Eurer is the dative or genitive form and does not fit the nominative here.
    • Eure would fit a feminine noun like Schwester, not Bruder.
    • Euren is the accusative form, but the verb ist takes a nominative subject.
