A2 · Two-way prepositions

ans Meer, auf den Markt, in die Stadt

choosing in, an or auf for places

Formin / an / auf + Akkusativ (wohin?) oder Dativ (wo?)

Meaning and usage

German usually picks the preposition by the kind of place, not by translating from English. Use in for enclosed spaces and for towns and countries with an article: in die Stadt gehen, in der Stadt bleiben, in die Schweiz fahren. Use an for water and edges: ans Meer fahren, an den Strand, an der Küste. Use auf for open or public places and events: auf den Markt gehen, auf der Party, auf die Post.

Each of these prepositions is two-way: with wohin? (direction) it takes the accusative, with wo? (location) it takes the dative. So Ich gehe in die Stadt but Ich bin in der Stadt. The common mistake is mixing the two, for example Ich gehe in der Stadt when you mean direction, or using the wrong preposition because English uses at or in. Where usage is split, like auf die Post and zur Post, both are accepted.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: ans

The verb fahren with a destination answers wohin?, so an takes the accusative: ans Meer.

    • im is dative of in, wrong both in preposition and in case for a destination.
    • ins is accusative of in, but the sea takes an, not in.
    • am is dative and would fit a location question like Wo seid ihr? Am Meer, not a destination.
