A2 · Strong verbs

fliegen, flog, geflogen

strong verbs with o in preterite and participle

FormInfinitiv -ie- → Präteritum -o- → Partizip II ge-…-o-en (fliegen, flog, geflogen)

Meaning and usage

This group of strong verbs has the vowel o in both the Präteritum and the Partizip II: fliegen, flog, geflogen, verlieren, verlor, verloren, ziehen, zog, gezogen, schließen, schloss, geschlossen, genießen, genoss, genossen, riechen, roch, gerochen, lügen, log, gelogen, frieren, fror, gefroren. You use the Präteritum mostly in written stories and reports, and the Partizip II in the spoken Perfekt. fliegen takes sein, and so does ziehen when it means moving house: Ich bin nach Berlin gezogen. The others take haben.

Two details to watch: verlieren starts with the inseparable prefix ver-, so its participle has no extra ge-: verloren. genießen works the same way: genossen. A common mistake is adding ge- anyway, as in geverloren. Learners also keep the ie of the infinitive, as in gefliegen instead of geflogen.

    • geflogen is the participle and needs sind: Wir sind nach Spanien geflogen.
    • fliegen is the present tense, but letzten Sommer is in the past.
    • fliegten treats fliegen as a weak verb, but it is strong: flog.
