A2 · Two-way prepositions

über dem Tisch, unter das Bett

über and unter for place: over, across, under

Formüber/unter + Dativ (wo?) / über/unter + Akkusativ (wohin?)

Meaning and usage

The prepositions über and unter belong to the two-way prepositions. When they tell you where something is, answering wo?, they take the dative: Die Katze sitzt unter dem Tisch. When they express movement to a place, answering wohin?, they take the accusative: Die Katze kriecht unter das Bett. With über, the accusative often means across: Er ging über die Straße., while the dative means above: Die Lampe hängt über dem Tisch.

A common mistake is using the dative after a movement verb, for example Ich gehe über der Straße when you mean I am crossing the street. That dative form means above the street. Remember: the case follows the question, wohin? or wo?, not whether the verb usually describes movement. Also note that über with the meaning about, as in sprechen über, is a different use and is not covered here.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: über

The verb geh expresses movement to a place, so wohin? applies and über takes the accusative: über die Straße means across the street.

    • Unter means under and cannot describe crossing a street.
    • Über der Straße is dative and would mean above the street, which does not fit crossing to the station.
    • Unter der is dative and gives the wrong meaning as well as the wrong case for movement.
