Ich habe einen. Ich habe keins.
saying one or none without repeating the noun
Formein/kein ohne Nomen → Endung wie der: einer, eins, keine, keinen …
Meaning and usage
When you talk about a person or thing without repeating the noun, ein and kein usually take the ending that der would have. In most cases this is the same ending you already know from before a noun: Hast du eine Tasche? Ja, ich habe eine. But in three spots ein and kein normally have no ending before a noun, and standing alone they fill that gap with the der-form: masculine nominative einer, keiner, and neuter eins, keins.
So you say Ich habe einen Stift. Ich habe einen. but Ich habe ein Auto. Ich habe eins. The common mistake is using the bare forms alone, for example Ich habe ein or Ich habe kein instead of Ich habe eins or Ich habe keins.

Hast du eigentlich Geld dabei? Nein, ich habe .
Show answer
Correct answer: keins
Geld is neuter, and a neuter noun replaced by kein without a noun takes the der-form ending: keins.
- Keine would fit a feminine noun or a plural, but Geld is neuter singular.
- Keinen would fit a masculine noun in the accusative, for example einen Stift, but Geld is neuter.
- Keiner is the masculine nominative standalone form and does not match the neuter noun Geld.
