der gute Wein, die gute Milch

the -e adjective ending after der, die, das

Formder/die/das + Adjektiv-e + Nomen (Nominativ/Akkusativ Singular)

Meaning and usage

When an adjective stands in front of a noun after the definite article der, die or das (and after dieser, jeder, welcher), the article already shows the case and gender. The adjective then takes a light ending: -e in the nominative singular of all three genders, and also in the accusative singular of feminine and neuter nouns. So we get der gute Wein, die gute Milch, das gute Bier, and in the accusative die gute Milch or das gute Bier.

The usual mistake is adding a stronger ending because the noun feels masculine or plural, giving forms like der guter Wein or die guten Milch. In the singular nominative and in the feminine and neuter accusative, the ending after the definite article is always -e. Plural forms and the masculine accusative take -en, and those are covered on their own pages.

    Ich nehme Suppe, bitte.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: die heiße

Suppe is feminine and the object of nehme. In the feminine accusative the article stays die, and after it the adjective takes -e: die heiße Suppe.

    • die heißen -en after die is the plural ending, as in die heißen Suppen, but Suppe is singular.
    • die heißes -es never follows die; it belongs after ein with a neuter noun, as in ein heißes Bad.
    • der heiße der is the masculine article, but Suppe is feminine.
