Formgegenüber + Noun (Dativ) or Pronoun (Dativ) + gegenüber
Meaning and usage
The preposition gegenüber always takes the dative case. It usually means opposite or across from a place: Das Café ist gegenüber dem Bahnhof. With a noun it can stand before or after it: gegenüber dem Bahnhof and dem Bahnhof gegenüber are both correct. With a pronoun it usually follows the pronoun: mir gegenüber, ihm gegenüber.
A common mistake is putting gegenüber with the accusative, for example gegenüber den Bahnhof, because learners mix it up with accusative prepositions like für or gegen. Remember: the case belongs to the preposition, so it is always dative, no matter what happens in the rest of the sentence. gegenüber can also describe an attitude towards a person, as in freundlich gegenüber den Nachbarn.
