A2 · Adjective endings

Der Wein ist gut.

Adjective after sein, werden, bleiben: no ending

FormSubjekt + sein/werden/bleiben + Adjektiv (ohne Endung)

Meaning and usage

After the verbs sein, werden and bleiben, an adjective stands alone at the end of the sentence and takes no ending. You say Der Wein ist gut and Die Schuhe sind neu, never Der Wein ist guter. The adjective here is not inside a noun phrase, so nothing has to be marked for case or gender.

Compare this with an adjective directly in front of a noun: ein guter Wein, der gute Wein. There the ending is required. The common learner mistake is to carry that ending over to the predicate: Das Bier ist gutes or Die Milch ist gute. After sein, werden and bleiben the plain form is the only correct one.

    Correct answer: warm

The adjective follows the verb war (from sein) and stands alone, so it takes no ending. The form warm is the plain adjective.

    • warmen carries an ending that belongs before a noun in the plural or in the accusative, not after sein.
    • warme carries an ending that belongs before a noun, as in die warme Suppe, not after sein.
    • warmes carries an ending that belongs before a neuter noun, as in ein warmes Wasser, not after sein.
