ein guter Wein, ein gutes Bier

ein with no ending, so the adjective shows the gender

Formein + Adjektiv mit -er (maskulin Nominativ) oder -es (Neutrum Nominativ/Akkusativ) + Nomen

Meaning and usage

After the article ein, there is usually an ending that shows the case and gender. But in three situations ein itself has no ending: masculine nominative and neuter nominative or accusative. In these situations the adjective takes over the job of showing the gender: it gets -er for masculine nouns and -es for neuter nouns. So we say ein guter Wein (masculine) and ein gutes Bier (neuter), and in the accusative Ich trinke ein gutes Bier.

The classic mistake is adding an ending to ein where none belongs, for example eines gutes Bier, or giving the adjective the wrong ending, for example ein gut Bier. Also check that -er is really the ending and not part of the adjective itself: teuer and sauber end in -er as part of the word, so ein teures Auto and ein sauberes Zimmer are correct.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: guter

Plan is masculine and nominative after Das ist. ein has no ending there, so the adjective shows the gender: ein guter Plan.

    • gutes -es marks a neuter noun, as in ein gutes Bier, but Plan is masculine.
    • gute -e is the ending after der, as in der gute Plan; after ein the adjective has to show the gender itself.
    • guten -en follows einen or einem, as in einen guten Plan; here the article is ein.
