A2 · würde, hätte, wäre

Könnten Sie …? Würden Sie …?

polite requests with Könnten Sie and Würden Sie

FormKönnten / Würden Sie (Könntest / Würdest du) … bitte … Infinitiv (Ende)

Meaning and usage

To ask someone politely for something, German uses the Konjunktiv II forms könnten and würden instead of the plain present. The verb comes first, then Sie, du or ihr, then the rest of the sentence, with the main verb as an infinitive at the end. A softening word like bitte or mal is very common: Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?

These questions sound friendlier than Können Sie …? or a bare imperative, so they are the normal choice with strangers, in shops and at work. The most common mistake is word order: learners put the infinitive in the wrong place, for example *Würden Sie helfen mir bitte? The infinitive must go to the end of the clause.

Sie mir bitte sagen, wie spät es ist?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: Könnten

The sentence addresses someone with the polite Sie, so the verb must be the Sie form of a polite request, and the infinitive sagen needs a modal or würden in position one.

    • Kannst is the du form, but the sentence clearly uses Sie.
    • Würdest is also the du form, so it does not fit with Sie.
    • Wärst is the du form of wäre, and wäre cannot combine with the infinitive sagen here.
