German würde, hätte, wäre: Polite Requests and Wishes

A2 ElementaryKonjunktiv II (Grundformen) in German4 questions below

The rulewürde plus an infinitive covers almost every verb; hätte, wäre and könnte are used directly, and between them they carry all ordinary politeness.

The four you need first

IndicativeSubjunctiveUsed for
ich habeich hättewishes, polite requests
ich binich wärehypothetical states
ich kannich könntepolite asking
ich werdeich würdeeverything else, plus an infinitive
Full forms: the endings are the same for all four

er/sie/eshättewärekönntewürde
wirhättenwärenkönntenwürden
ihrhättetwärtkönntetwürdet
sie/Siehättenwärenkönntenwürden

würde + infinitive

For nearly every other verb, this is how the subjunctive is formed in modern German. würde is conjugated and sits second; the main verb goes to the end as an infinitive: the same bracket a modal builds.

The verbs that resist würde are exactly the four above plus the other modals: hätte, wäre, könnte, müsste, dürfte, sollte, möchte. Saying würde haben or würde sein is understood but marks you out immediately.

What they are for at this level

UseExampleEnglish
Polite requestKönnten Sie das wiederholen?Could you repeat that?
Polite offerMöchten Sie einen Kaffee?Would you like a coffee?
WishIch hätte gern ein Bier.I'd like a beer.
SuggestionWir könnten ins Kino gehen. We could go to the cinema.
HypotheticalDas wäre schön.That would be nice.
AdviceDu solltest mehr schlafen. You should sleep more.

Where it goes wrong

Ich will einen Kaffee.

Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.

Grammatically flawless and socially wrong. In a café, Ich will sounds like a demand. Ich hätte gern or Ich möchte is what people actually say, and the subjunctive is doing all of that work.

Common questions

What is the difference between 'ich möchte' and 'ich will'?

möchte is polite and will is blunt. Both mean you want something, but in shops, restaurants and any request directed at a stranger, will comes across as a demand. möchte, hätte gern and könnte are the everyday forms of politeness.

When should I use würde and when the verb's own subjunctive?

Use the verb's own form for haben, sein and the modals: hätte, wäre, könnte, müsste, sollte, dürfte. Use würde plus infinitive for essentially everything else. The older one-word subjunctives of other verbs (käme, ginge, führe) survive in writing but sound archaic in speech.

Is 'hätte gern' the same as 'möchte'?

In practice yes, and both are polite ways to ask for something. hätte gern is slightly more idiomatic when ordering goods ('Ich hätte gern ein Brot'), while möchte works equally for objects and actions: 'Ich möchte zahlen'.
