A2 · würde, hätte, wäre

Du solltest …

sollte: giving advice with should

Formsollte (Position 2) … Infinitiv (Ende)

Meaning and usage

sollte is the form German uses for advice and recommendations: Du solltest mehr schlafen means You should sleep more. It looks the same for all persons except that the ending changes: ich/er sollte, du solltest, wir/sie sollten, ihr solltet. The main verb goes to the end of the clause as an infinitive: Du solltest jetzt schlafen gehen.

Use sollte for advice about now or the future, not for the past. A very common mistake is putting the second verb in position 2 instead of at the end, for example Du solltest gehen jetzt schlafen instead of Du solltest jetzt schlafen gehen. For a general piece of advice about people in general, German often uses Man sollte …, as in Man sollte mehr Wasser trinken.
