A2 · Adjective endings

die neuen Schuhe, meine neuen Schuhe

plural adjectives take -en after any article

FormArtikel (Plural, alle Fälle) + Adjektiv + -en + Nomen im Plural

Meaning and usage

In the plural, an adjective before a noun takes -en whenever an article word stands in front of it: a der-word like die or diese, or an ein-word like keine, meine, deine or eure. This holds in every case: die neuen Schuhe (nominative and accusative), mit den neuen Schuhen (dative), der neuen Schuhe (genitive).

The reason is that the article already shows the case and number, so all adjectives in the plural share one ending after an article. The usual mistake is mixing in the no-article ending: learners say meine neue Schuhe instead of meine neuen Schuhe. Remember: plural plus article always means -en.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: meine

Schuhe is plural and the possessive meine already shows the case, so the adjective takes -en: meine neuen Schuhe.

    • meiner is dative or genitive; the object here needs the accusative plural meine.
    • Meinen is the masculine singular accusative form, but Schuhe is plural, so it does not fit here.
    • Meinem is a singular dative form and cannot go with the plural noun Schuhe.
