Viertel nach sieben, zehn vor acht

saying minutes past and to the hour with nach and vor

Form(Minuten) + nach/vor + (Stunde), auch: Viertel nach/vor + Stunde

Meaning and usage

To say the time in minutes, German puts the minutes before the hour, with nach for minutes after the hour and vor for minutes before it: zehn nach sieben is 7:10, zehn vor acht is 7:50. A quarter works the same way: Viertel nach sieben is 7:15 and Viertel vor acht is 7:45. You can also combine this with halb, which means 7:30 in halb acht: fünf vor halb acht is 7:25.

The common mistake is translating word by word from English and saying sieben nach zehn for 7:10. In German the hour comes last, so it must be zehn nach sieben. Note that Viertel vor acht (7:45) and halb acht (7:30) both mention eight, the coming hour, which feels strange for English speakers at first.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: vor

The second clause says 7:50, and ten minutes before eight is zehn vor acht.

    • halb needs no number before it and means 7:30 here, not 7:50.
    • nach would give 8:10, which does not match 7:50.
    • um is the word for at with clock times, not for minutes before the hour.
