A2 · Numbers, dates and time

1998, im Jahr 1998

saying a year: bare, with im Jahr, never with in

Form(im Jahr(e)) + Jahreszahl, ohne Präposition 'in'

Meaning and usage

A year usually stands in the sentence with no preposition at all: Ich bin 1998 geboren, 2013 war ich erst drei Jahre alt. You can also put it after im Jahr or the slightly more formal im Jahre: Ich bin im Jahr 1998 geboren. English speakers often translate 'in 1998' word for word and say in 1998, but that is not German: with a year alone, use either the bare year or im Jahr.

You also need to know how to read a year aloud. Years before 2000 are read as hundreds plus the rest: 1998 is neunzehnhundertachtundneunzig. Years from 2000 on start with zweitausend: 2026 is zweitausendsechsundzwanzig. Germans do not read years digit by digit like phone numbers.
